The Odyssey

Have you ever thought some exciting adventure you were about to have would be “epic”? Did you know that “epic adventures” form the very foundation of classic works of literature that have endured throughout the ages and made countless persons yearn not only for adventure but also aspire to the virtuous life of heroism? Such is the case with The Iliad and also The Odyssey, both of them extended poems recorded over 2800 years ago by the gifted Ancient Greek poet Homer. The Odyssey teaches us that, while remarkably epic adventures can happen overseas, the greatest and most memorable of all epic adventures happens in the home and above all in our heart.

The youth of our parish, with their parents, are welcome to a series of presentations by Fr. Lewis to learn what The Odyssey teaches us about everyday heroism; seeking excellence in moral decision making; fidelity to commitment; righteous living; staying the course of faithful Christian discipleship; responsibility for our fellow man; discernment of  spirits; and full human flourishing. These themed presentations will be accompanied by select professionally-rendered images from Marvel’s adaptation of The Odyssey.

Because we are a Catholic church and because the Bible rivals the influence The Odyssey has had and continues to have on culture throughout the past two millenia, the presentations will be led through the lens of our Catholic Faith.

We’re very excited to offer this second in a series of explorations of classical works as seen through the lens of  classical writers & contemporary artists; our Catholic teachings; and, our pastor, Fr. Lewis.  The program is open to 15 (fifteen) of our youth Grades 7 through Grade 10.

While there are no specific “study” / program materials, attendees will be provided with  folders, handouts, notebook, etc. As a result, a small program & supply fee of $20 per student (Parents attend FREE) is requested to be paid at the time of registration or at the first session.

The number of participants is limited and the demand is high. It’s not often  we have the opportunity of having Fr. Lewis in-the-classroom. As a result, if you register and get a seat, PLEASE attend as many others wanted the  opportunity to be here!

  • Registrations MUST be received by Sunday, February 25.
  • There is a small program & supply fee of $20 per student due at Registration.
